Hip replacement · England
Can I get my NHS hip replacement sooner at another hospital?
It may be worth asking. Published waiting context differs between hospitals, and if you are likely to wait longer than the applicable maximum you can ask the NHS to look into suitable alternatives. But no website can confirm that another hospital would see you earlier — only the NHS can confirm that.
What evidence can point you towards
Two published sources are useful together. NHS England's monthly Trauma and Orthopaedics waiting figures give each provider's specialty-level waiting context. The National Joint Registry shows which hospitals recorded primary total hip replacements.
Published NHS waiting figures are reported for the whole Trauma and Orthopaedics specialty, which covers many conditions and operations. They are not a hip-replacement-specific wait and cannot predict your own operation date.
A hospital whose published context appears noticeably shorter, and which records hip replacement activity, may be worth asking about. That is all the evidence supports.
What it cannot tell you
It cannot confirm:
- that the provider has capacity or would accept a transfer
- that you are clinically suitable for treatment there
- when you would actually be treated
Turning it into an action
If you are likely to wait longer than the maximum waiting time that applies to you (generally 18 weeks from referral for non-urgent consultant-led treatment), you can ask the hospital or your local integrated care board (ICB) to look into suitable alternative providers that could see or treat you sooner. Exceptions apply — for example if you choose to wait longer or delaying is clinically appropriate — and it is not an automatic transfer.
What this means for you
- Check how long you have waited since referral.
- Look at which nearby providers may be worth asking about.
- Ask the hospital or ICB — and treat any answer as theirs to give.

Why don't you just show which hospital is quickest?
Because published figures are specialty-wide and cannot predict an individual operation date. A 'quickest hospital' label would suggest a certainty the data does not have.
