How NHSWaitHelper works
We're an independent platform. This page explains exactly what our tools do, where the underlying information comes from, and what we deliberately do not do.
What our calculator does
Our 18-week calculator takes a referral date you provide and counts forward to show whether 18 weeks have passed under the NHS England Referral to Treatment (RTT) operational standard. That standard, set out in the NHS Constitution, says that 92% of incomplete pathways should be within 18 weeks at any given time. The calculator does not access NHS systems and does not know your individual clinical status.
Sources we draw on
- NHS Constitution for England
- NHS England — Referral to Treatment statistics
- NHS England — RTT rules and guidance
- NHS — Your choices in the NHS
- NHS — Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS)
How content is reviewed
Articles are written in plain English and checked against the NHS sources listed above. We review long-form pages periodically and date-stamp every page with a "Last updated" field so you can see when it was last checked. If guidance changes materially, we update the article and refresh the date.
What we deliberately do not do
- We do not give medical advice. We are not clinicians.
- We do not give legal advice. We are not solicitors.
- We do not contact the NHS, your GP, or hospital on your behalf.
- We do not promise faster treatment, financial compensation, or specific outcomes.
Limitations to be aware of
Waiting times vary significantly by specialty, hospital trust, and individual circumstances. The 18-week standard is an operational target, not an automatic legal entitlement to treatment on day 126. Some pathways have legitimate clinical reasons for longer waits, and the RTT clock can be paused in certain circumstances. Our guidance is a starting point — your GP, clinician, or PALS team know your situation in detail and you should always weigh their advice first.
Independence
NHSWaitHelper is an independent information platform. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operating on behalf of the NHS, the Department of Health and Social Care, or any NHS trust.
