Hip replacement · England
Does switching hospital reset my NHS hip replacement wait?
It depends on how the move happens, so there is no single answer. NHS England's referral-to-treatment rules set out how waiting-time clocks are handled, and a move arranged by the NHS because of a long wait can be treated differently from one you start yourself, such as through a new referral. Always confirm how your clock will be treated before you move.
Why the answer varies
The RTT rules suite describes when a clock continues, stops or starts afresh. The route you take — for example an NHS-arranged transfer to another provider, or a new referral — can lead to different administrative handling.
We do not repeat the simple claim that your waiting time always carries over to a new provider, because that is not true in every situation.
What to confirm in writing
- Will my existing referral-to-treatment clock continue at the new provider?
- Will I need a new outpatient appointment or assessment there?
- If something changes, will I return to my original hospital's list?
Who to ask
Ask the hospital that currently holds your referral, or your ICB if they are arranging the alternative. If you are being referred afresh, ask the referrer to explain the effect on your wait.
What this means for you
- Do not cancel your current place until the move is confirmed.
- Get the answer on your clock in writing.
- Ask again if the answer is unclear.

If I ask my GP for a new referral, does my wait start again?
It may. A new referral can start a new clock depending on the circumstances. Ask before making that choice.
